Safety Tips For Every Solo Female Traveler

Traveling as a solo female can enhance your trip as you’ll meet more new people compared to if you traveled with a friend, according to Ohio University. Research shows that 72% of American women have taken a solo trip, which is higher than the number of men traveling alone. Regardless of whether you’re heading to a Mexican yoga retreat on your own or making a nature-filled trip to Finland, you must prioritize your safety and security. So, how can you ensure you have a fun but safe trip?

Pick a Safe Destination

Some destinations are a lot safer for female travelers traveling on their own than others. One study ranked South Africa, Brazil, and Russia as the three worst places for women to visit on their own. On the other hand, Mexico is considered a safe destination to travel to. Xinalani Retreat is particularly safe as it’s remote and has no road access, so people don’t pass by on a whim. Other good places for females to visit include Salt Lake City in Utah, San Francisco in California, and New York City. When choosing a place to stay at these destinations, opt for traditional, safe hotels. Avoid hostels or shared rooms where you’re in close contact with others, even if they are more affordable.

Stay in Contact with Others

One of the biggest risks of traveling alone is not having a companion to give you help if you get into difficulty. For example, if you slip, injure your ankle, and need medical assistance and no-one knows where you are, it could be some time before you receive help. While spur-of-the-moment travel decisions can be fun, always let a designated person back home know where you are and what you’re up to. There are several different apps you can use which will share your location with your loved ones and let them track your movements. These should be enough to protect you and ensure the alarm is raised if an accident does happen. Don’t forget to take out travel insurance for instances like this either.

Take Care of your Belongings

There are 400,000 cases of pickpocketing worldwide every year. You can prevent pickpocketing and the chance of losing your personal possessions by not keeping items, such as cash and your phone, in your back pockets. You might think that a bag is a safer option, but it must be the right type of bag and worn correctly. If you favor a backpack, wear it on the front of your body rather than your back so you’ve got your eyes on it at all times. Crossbody bags are a good choice and can be worn underneath clothing so no-one even needs to know you’ve got one.

Traveling on your own as a woman should be a fun and exciting experience. You need to take your security and safety seriously, though. By following these tips, you’re sure to have a good, safe trip.
